Implications for Education Providers and Staff

The Equality Act 2010 provides a single legal framework with clear, streamlined law - designed to tackle disadvantage and discrimination more effectively than the plethora of previous disability and discrimination legislation.

This short course provides a summary of key concepts of the 2010 Equality Act -

  • introduces the protected characteristics identified in the Act - specifying those that apply to schools/colleges
  •  reviews similarities to and differences from this Act and previous statutory disability and discrimination instruments
  •  considers changes to disability discrimination that apply to education

The course may be completed in one extended online session, or in several short sessions of 15-20 minutes each, so it fits in easily around  busy schedules.

Course aims:

  • to inform education staff about the purpose of the 2010 Equality Act and what it means for them
  • to make all education staff aware of their obligation to ensure that all learners have the same educational opportunities and the same chance to participate in school/college/ institution life

Learning outcomes:
This member of education staff has developed a knowledge and understanding of:

  • the protected characteristics covered by the 2010 Equality Act and the new definition of direct discrimination
  • the need to make reasonable adjustments to prevent discrimination
  • the prohibited conduct and other key provisions of the Act, including harassment and victimisation

An electronic course log is generated for each course member and a short review quiz is provided at the end of the course.  A course certificate describing learning outcomes is issued when the course has been completed.
